Joel Palsson - Horn

CD Flugur003 (Flugur, 2010)

We are proud to be distributing another major release from Jazz musician number one here in Iceland.

Horn is the fifth album from tenor saxophonist and composer Jóel Pálsson, and in our opinion his strongest work so far. Big words indeed, since his previous four albums have received international acclaim and also swept up all the yearly Jazz awards here in Iceland. Horn is a punky, funky and relentless mother ala Miles of the 70s, but Sonny Rollins and Coltrane are not far away. There’s also a heartbreaking ballad and even a whiff of sacred music flying around!

While old timer Eyþór Gunnarsson (Piano, Rhodes), and Davíð Þór Jónsson (Bass, Hammond organ, Moog etc.), and Einar Scheving (drums) all perform admirably as expected, special praise must go to Ari Bragi Kárason, a young and promising trumpet- and flugelhornist, for his fresh and exciting playing. Jóel anchors it all, and, simply put, has never sounded better. Voted Jazz Album of the Year 2010 in the Icelandic Music Awards. Our sincere recommendations.
